How to bring up Dhruv?

This was the Question that I always used to wonder about for the past 2years. I think I have an answer now.

I was always worried about how to bring up Dhruv and how to get along with him?  Reasons for my worry was – Dhruv is a TAURUS and I a LEO. Thats something deadly. I being a LEO wanted Dhruv to do everything my way and he being a TAURUS always resisted everthing I said. We have resolved that by my understanding that Dhruv needs his space so now I give him 2 – 3 choices to choose from.

Like – rather than making him wear a dress of my choice. I give him an option of 2-3 dresses of MY CHOICE for him to choose from. What he wants to eat is almost always decided by him ofcourse I give him a list … sometimes a funny list. What will Dhruv have for Breakfast today? Butter-Parantha, Cheese-Parantha OR Thappad-Parantha. He almost always asks for Thappad-Parantha :)

I have started spending some more QUALITY time with him. Earlier too I used to spend my evenings mostly with Dhruv. But now its a bit different. Our schedule for the evening is half-an-hour of homework. The homework is mostly sitting down and reciting the poems he’s learning in his playschool, coloring pictures, recognising shapes and lately drawing standing and sleeping lines. Then half an hour of play.

Earlier, I used to sit with Dhruv and always keep teaching him how to arrange blocks correctly or always used to keep pestering him about which color is this and which shape is this and don’t put this in mouth and do this and that. The result was he used to go away and play something different or watch TV within minutes of our playtime. We have changed that now. During our playtime I also become a 2yr old and allow him to arrange blocks – once he is done I praise him and then say now you teach me how to do the way you did it? And casually put – now lets try it this way. Lets see how it will look? Same goes with playing bat-ball – I almost always follow his instructions. The result is he listens to all my instructions in the study time so that we can then start our playtime.

One more thing that was confusing for Dhruv and myself, which we have rectified now. We live in a joint family, and all of us mostly communicate in Hindi at home and so Dhruv started picking up hindi sentences very quickly and clearly. Then a couple of relatives and friends suggested – ENGLISH is very important and he should speak in english. So, I started talking to Dhruv in English and the result the poor kid seemed always confused how to say what and started stammering when in my presence. That was the time I realised – my parents never forced any language on me. They were just natural. But still today I am not too bad with english. So whats the big deal?

Taking cue from my parents(the way they have brought me up) and my-in-laws I have decided to be natural with my son and let him be a natural! I think that helps in a child’s development. For all the parents with kids or teens I would just say -

Be what you are, let you child be what he wants to be! But always keep your eyes and ears open for what your child is doing/learning and from whom.

Have a nice day!
