Locating firefox extension
While developing a firefox extension the most cumbersome task is to test each and every update every few minutes.
As for testing we need to follow the steps -
1) Create a Zip file of all the folders (This is again tricky – you should select each & every file and folder to create a valid zip file)
2) Then rename it to .xpi extension
3) Uninstall earlier version of extension(if installed)
4) Now install your XPI
A work around is – directly place your extension folder in the directory where FireFox stores all the extensions. But finding out the ‘actual’ location where these extensions are stored is not a trivial task even if one spend time searching the web for answer (try searching Google). In fact, I as all common developers initially thought that the extension should be rightfully stored in Firefox’s directory especially if there is actually a ‘extensions’ directory existing within the program directory. To my disappointment, none was found there.
Some more search and spending time found that the extensions are actually stored in -
WINDOWS XP – C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\Profile\extensions
WINDOWS Vista – C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\Whatever.default\extensions
